5 Influential People:
1. My dad: My dad influenced me by always being so relaxed, he never took life too seriously. When my dad and I were together it was just the two of us and we never spent a lot of time watching TV although we would always go to the movies together, we mainly spent a lot of time outdoors adventuring around. His influence is still with me today and I hope that my children have the same fond memories of me as a parent that I have of him. He always took the time to listen and was so patient with me, he let me roam around and explore and figure things out on my own, yet he was always protective and always a provider.
2. My Grandma Connie: My GMA Connie (as she is known to my friends) is everything you think of when you think of the word "Grandma" warm, compassionate, kind and nurturing. She was always there for each of her 14 grand children and 8 great grandchildren. She would always listen to us and if you were our friends you were family. She expressed her love by cooking for all of the kids and the neighbors to. She impacts my life still to this day because anytime I need advice or just want to vent to someone or have someone to talk to and to listen to me I immediately call her. I only hope that I could be half of the mother and grandmother that she is.
3. Mrs. Schwab: Mrs Schwab was my first grade teacher and the reason that I went in to the early childhood education field. She was the most creative, kind and dynamic teacher. She followed curriculum and lesson plans but she always came up with her own creative twist and of all my elementary school teachers she was the one (even at 5 years old) whom I remembered. She influences me still to this day because when I am with a child who is looking up to me as their teacher I want to make sure that I am influencing them in the same ways that she did.
4. Mrs. Miranda: Mrs Miranda was my 8th grade English teacher and although I always wanted to work in early childhood education she was another influential person in my life that made me want to work with children and go into teaching. She made English fun and would go outside of the curriculum a little bit and incorporate lesson plans around Urban Legends and videotaping modern fairy tales. Growing up it was hard to get into school unless I was really interested in it and she made the not so fun parts of school still seem fun. She was also a friend and confidant too many of the children including myself and seemed to really understand all the middle school angst. Today with my own children as they approach middle school age, I hope to take the calm and guiding approach that she always did.
5. My Aunt Christy: My Aunt Christy is my fathers sister. For all of my life I she was more like a mother to me than an aunt. She made motherhood look so easy and she was always so patient with all of us. She took care of me when I was little and influenced me to be the best mother that I could be. She influences me to be a kind, loving and patient mother even when it's not always easy. There was never a dull moment around my aunt, just lots of laughs and hugs and that's the type of childhood I want for my own children and the children that I teach.

Hello Katy,
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome you have a grandma "Connie" as in my blog I mention my aunt "Connie", I thought that was an awesome similarity. I love that you included teachers as well, I had a third grade teacher that reminds me a lot of how you felt about Ms. Schwab. Her name was Mrs. Bilovesky, and her songs she made up to learn multiplication and the continents of the world, I still sing those songs as an adult to remember certain things. Thanks for sharing.
Hello Katy, I enjoyed reading your blog. Your grandmother reminds me of my wife grandmother. Sweet spirit and full of wisdom. I enjoy being around older people because they can teach you things. I know that you are as happy as I am to have a family support system that will encourage and motivate you throughout life. But most important, having someone to love you in spite of life mishap.
ReplyDeleteHi Katy, just like you many of my teachers during my school year inspired me to become an educator. I think that its great to grow up with positive mentors to help motivate us and keep us grounded. It also great to see that you grew up with family members that were positive.
